Chapter 1

The strong scent of milk clung to the she-kits fur, and her pawsteps were very rythmic. But today this cat would no longer be known as a Soft Claw, but an Omega. Whisper held her breath. Which one of the many alphas could be her trainer? There werent many options since cats were scarce. Only Flowerblaze, her mother, and Roseheart had had kits this spring. But, luckily, the superiors mate was due for her kits soon. She felt a tug on her tail and smelt the strong scent of her sister, Hazel. "Mother wants you now." she said, pulling her smaller sister backwards. "Fine." she hissed and pulled away. Sisters were not good things to have... well at least if your sister was Hazel. Padding through the bracken which was tightly woven together, she knew her mother was just finishing Burdock, her brother. "Come here Whisper." she meowed, letting Burdock go. Whisper rolled her eyes and walked over to her mother, sitting down in front of her. Flowerblaze licked her forehead, making her kit hiss with annoyance. "I dont need groomed!" But the queen licked her until she sparkled. When her mother finished, she ran out of the nursery, and right into Honeyledge. The elder let out a grunt as she was bumbarreled, but when she noticed the Soft Claw she purred. "Aren't you going to be fixing my bedding soon?" she asked teasingly, her voice craking with age. Whisper nodded polietly, though she was mighty excited on becoming an omega. A yowl sounded from the edge of the clearing, which made Whisper jump. But she soon relaxed at the sound of her leaders voice. "All cat old enough to be in the omega's den, gather around." The little cat bounded close to the Great Rock, where all the other cats were gathering. She could sense Nights gaze rest upon her and her siblings, and then the growl of Little, Rosehearts kitten. "I'm ready to be an Omega too." She could just picture the horrible expression on his face. Him and his brother were as annoying as furballs! She swiveled her ears to face the leaders voice, awaiting for her name to be called. "It is time for these three Soft Claws to become Omegas." A few purrs of approval sounded around the clearing, and Whisper felt hot under all their gazes. "Hazel." Sparrowspirit began. "It is my honer, to annonce that you are ready to become an Omega, but I do need your approval." Her sister nodded. "Yes, I do approve." "Then, from now on until you have taking your journy to the Spirit Stone, you shall be in training to become an alpha." He waved his tail and a solid black tom approched. "Your trainer shall be Ravenclaw." He touched his nose to her sisters, and nudged her into the group of cats. "Now, Burdock, It is also my honer to annonce your readiness to become an Omega... but..." "I give you permission." he blurted out, unable to keep his excitment under control. "Then, again, until you travel to the Spirit Stone, you'll be in training to become an alpha." This time a light brown tom approched, Woodpelt. "Your trainer is Woodpelt." The toms touched noses and went into the group just like Hazel had. Now only herself was left, and she twitched her whiskers with unease. "Whisper." he looked down on the she-cat. "You too will become an omega, but your approval is needed." She nodded her head. "I would love to be an Omega." "Then, until you also travel to the Spirit Stone, you will too become in training to be an Omega." A calico and white she-cat appeared and touched her nose. "Your trainer is Fernspeckle." She sensed the liutinent lighten and her expression became confused. Are Kestraltail and Fernspeckle mates? "Now, I would like Kestraltail to take out a patrol... other than that, meeting dismissed." He jumped down from the rock, and sat infront of his den, speaking to his liutentient. A tail rested gently on her flank which made her jump. "It's me." the voice she knew was her trainers. "I've decided for our first day of training... we shall collect some bedding for the elders." Whisper growled under her breath. Couldn't Hazel or Burdock do this? As Fernspeckle padded past her, she followed, feeling her way through the nicely woven tendrals and brambles in the tunnel leading in or out of their camp. The breeze carried faint scent of mouse, but the richer ones were maple and oak tree's. You could tell it was spring by the way the birds chirped, and that the flowers were not in full bloom... and yes, a blind cat can tell all of this by her scent glands. They turned at a river, and slowly padded onward to a grassy meadow, which was filled with buzzing bees, and a doe and her fawn in the distance. They stopped at the foot of a tree, where smells were weak, except for the one of moss. "Now, to collect moss, you just scratch at it until you have a big enough wad for elders bedding." The alpha scratched at the moss, and it became a big bundle for which she grasped in her teeth. "Now you try." Her meow was muffled by the moss but the Omega knew what she was saying. She unsheathed her claws and scratched at the moss, it's soft texture making it easier to claw. When a big enough bundle was made, she grasped it in her jaws. Fernspeckle began to bound away, and Whisper followed, but not very closely. A bird called in the distance, and then she pricked her ears. Slowly placing her moss down, she slithered through some weeds, sniffing the air to make sure what she heard was right. Sure enough, the smell of mouse flowed into her scent glands. She had not been through her training, but instinct kicked in. She followed the scent, and finally she could tell it was close enough to pounce. The wind was flowing towards her, which made this perfect. She pounced, the mouse letting out a squeak but Whisper was on course. She landed, paws ontop of the mouse, and quickly she killed it. Suddenly she felt like she was being watched. "Well done!" The sound of a cat approuching her made her sniff the air. "Thank's Sparrowspirit..." She hung her head with shame. She wasn't suppoused to be hunting. "Fernspeckle must be a fast trainer." Whisper twitched her whiskers. "We haven't trained yet." she addmitted, and dropped her mouse. "Then I'm impressed." He meowed. "I would like to know what you were suppoused to be doing though." "Collecting moss." she said, "But it wasn't that exciting." She sniffed the air, and she knew Fernspeckle was approching. "Sorry Fernspeckle." she called and Sparrowspirit turned his head in disbelief. "She's not..." "I was wondering where you were!" she said bounding out of the bushes. "Oh, Sparrowspirit, I..." Her mentor glanced at the mouse. "Did you catch that?" "Yes." she said and stood up. "We better get the moss to the elders shan't we?" Picking up her mouse, she quickly padded past the cats, but she didn't miss her supieriors remark. "You've got a special cat in your paws." He said and dismissed the she-cat. Fernspeckle hadn't caught up to her until she had reached the entrance to camp. "I think tomorrow we'll start battle training tomorrow." she said and padded infront of her, into camp. Whisper purred with satisfaction, and padded after her. She became close to the cave which the elders slept in. She could hear Darkrazzle, grumbling in his sleep, and Honeyledge was grooming herself. She slowly walked in, and heard the farmiliar voice of the she-cat elder. "Whisper! So nice to see you, what have you got there?" She had forgotten to place her mouse on the kill pile and shrugged. "I've brought you fresh-kill and bedding." she meowed, dropping what was in her mouth. "Fernspeckle has Darkrazzle's enless he wants these ones?" She shook her head. "He's asleep at the moment youngen, just go do whatever you omega's do now-a-days." She swayed her tail signaling the young cat away. Whisper padded out, the camp felt busier than ever! Kestraltail and his patrol, made up of Dawngaze, Rufflefeather, and his omega Night. All of them seemed tense, but only Kestraltail walked toward the leaders den. Was he back by now? "What is it Kestraltail?" The superior called through his prey, he was standing at the entrance. "CloudPride have been on our territory, we fear they may be stealing prey." he was stern, and some hostility past through him. "Their scent was uncovered near their territory, all the way to the creature trail." Sparrowspirit nodded. "The meeting is tomorrow, I'll have a word with him." He dropped his kill on the pile and called the patrol towards his den, and they all went inside. Fernspeckle had an odd scent flowing off her. Worry... about Kestraltail huh? She moved her head to look up her mentor, though nothing but darkness was there."Kestraltail will be fine." she meowed and padded to the Omega's den for a good nights rest. The sun started to sink behind the horizon, and when the first star shone, the pride was silent.

The sun barely shone in the morning, and all the cats knew it was going to be a rainy day. Whisper streched, and after yawned, before padding to the clearing. Hardly any cats were out and about, only the liutenint, Rufflefeather, and her father, Whiskerfoot. She sniffed the fresh kill pile. She guessed no one had been hunting, for it was old smelling, and damp. Plus, only two items remained. "Kestraltail!" she called. "Can you orginize some hunting parties?" she asked as he approuched. "Do you see how many cats are out here?" he grunted. "No, I dont." she retorted truthfully. He paused, probably remembering she was blind. "Well, not alot... I will when maybe 4 more cats awake." He touched her nose respectfully and padded over to Rufflefeather, instructing him that he would have his own hunting party.
